WHY?
Forward thinking.
HOW?
Sustainability
On the Stella McCartney website there is a section dedicated to sustainability and the value the brand has for animals, people, and nature. As a lifelong vegetarian, Stella McCartney does not use leather or fur in her designs and strives to make clothing as environmentally conscious as she can. Stella McCartney has helped pioneer new alternative materials by utilizing cutting edge technologies and pushing towards circularity by recycling clothes and eliminating the concept of waste. This move helps to save ancient and endangered environments like forests and measure their impact with these ground-breaking tools. On the Stella McCartney website, there is a section dedicated to sustainability and the respect the brand has for animals, people, and nature. She has taken sustainability and elevated it to define business which shows that ethical standards and fashion can come together.
Innovation
Known to many as a “fashion pioneer,” Stella McCartney was honored by the British Fashion Council for her innovation. Specifically, the brand has collaborated with Bolt Threads, a company that produces fibers made from nature and uses a closed loop manufacturing process. The company continues to be innovative by using cutting-edge technology to create materials that are environmentally friendly. Using recycled materials, as well as creating new ways to make vegetarian leather, cashmere and silk so as not to hurt the environment.
Implement solutions to help our environment
Stella McCartney started Clevercare, which is a garment labeling system to remind everyone to consider the environment when washing and caring for your clothes. Clevercare covers five simple areas to help extend the life of your clothing, reduce the amount of clothes that end up in a landfill and help reduce our footprint. In December 2018, she announced a charter with United Nations to combat high carbon production methods associated with the fashion industry.
Social Responsibility
Stella McCartney believes everyone in the supply chain should be treated with respect and dignity. Advocating for human rights begins with us and in order to build a modern and resilient supply chain, providing desirable jobs and fostering people’s skills allows Stella McCartney to strengthen their voice.
Measuring and Reducing our Impact
Stella McCartney uses a tool called the Environmental Profit and Loss (EP&L) to measure and understand our impact on the environment. It measures everything from the raw materials we use to make the clothes, to how we make the clothes and the way in which we sell the clothes in stores. This tool allows them to reengineer new materials that use less water to produce them. Stella McCartney is concentrated in Tier 4, which is raw material production, which is dedicated to developing and using sustainable material supply chains. To further reduce their impact, they were the first luxury brand to implement the Clean by Design program which helps to reduce the environmental impact of the factories that help make their brand.
